It started with this button-down cardigan that my daughter didn’t wear. I like it but felt like it needed something added to it. So, I added ruffles!

I had some already ruffled, cream fabric on hand.

Next, I measured the length need for the ruffle.

Then, I cut the ruffle fabric into strips. in graduated widths. I made the cut just to the right of the seams in the fabric.

I decided on using 3 rows of ruffles.

Starting with the widest fabric strip, I sewed it to the cardigan following the seam in the ruffled fabric that was the farthest from the edge. I sewed just that one seams because the others will be sewn down at the same time as the other ruffle strips. When I got to the bottom, I just folded the ruffle under and sewed it down.

Next, I sewed the 2nd widest strip right on top of the first fabric strip.

Last, I sewed the narrowest ruffle strip on, following the edge of the cardigan, to finish off the edge. So, in this step, I was sewing through 4 layers: the cardigan, and all 3 ruffle strips.

My upcycled, improved, ruffled cardigan. Much better, don’t you think?
