We have been blessed with not only 3 children of our own but 36 adorable nieces and nephews whom we love and treasure! So, when this fun Kiwi Crate arrived at my door, I invited 4 of my nieces, who are all 5 or 6 years old, over for a fun afternoon of crafting.

We opened the box and discovered that we had received a space exploration kit! There were 2 pair of scissors on top.

Inside were a bunch of fun, sparkly craft items that captured my niece’s attention immediately!

After covering the table with newspaper to protect it, we started with the space mobile. The kit was designed for 2 kids and since I had already invited 4 girls and didn’t want to un-invite anyone, we shared! Each girl got one piece of the mobile base and 5 shapes to decorate. I grabbed 2 pair of safety scissors from our craft cupboard and 2 additional brushes. I like that all of the supplies needed to create 2 mobiles were included in the Kiwi Crate along with kid friendly instructions.

The girls loved the sparkly silver paint!

We put 1 set of paints between 2 of the girls on each side of the table. Each niece got her own paper cup of water to give the brush a bath and a paper towel for a drying after the bath.

Christine was home from work and she helped the girls. Vanessa was home as well and she helped too.

All of the nieces decorated the shapes in their own way. It was so cute to see how they went about it.

Although they worked diligently at painting there was a lot of giggling and silliness! Kids are so refreshing. They find joy and hilarity in the smallest things!

We used a hair dryer to speed up the drying process so that the shapes could be flipped and painted on the opposite side.

After all that hard work, it was time for a break. So, while the paint dried on the 2nd side, we went outside for an ice cream cone. Vanessa played some games with the girls and ran around for awhile.

There were 2 choices in the kit for attaching the shapes to the mobile. The first was to use the sparkly pipe cleaners and the second was to have an adult help with the string. The girls were all about the sparkly pipe cleaners. They loved that they could do it themselves and the twisting was their favorite part.

Here are their complete mobiles. They were sooo excited to show their moms!!

The second project in the Kiwi Crate was to make rockets! My nephew made these at camp last summer and was so impressed. Everything needed for the project was included. Since there were 4 straws and lots of paper choices there was enough for all 4 girls.

The rockets were easy to make but they do require the help of an adult or older kid so I was glad that Christine and Vanessa were home. The girls chose a piece of the paper which we wrapped loosely around the straw and secured it with tape. Then, we pinched the end closed and taped it shut. The last step was to attach the ribbons to the end.

The girls thought these rockets were sooo cool and were delighted each time they shot one across the room. And if it happened to hit one of the other people in the house that was even better!

While waiting for their moms to pick them up the girls lined up on the driveway to see who could shoot their rocket the furthest! I have to say it was a wonderful afternoon. I liked everything about the Kiwi Crate from the packaging, to the kid friendly, colorful directions to the complete contents for each craft. There was an additional craft suggestion card included for a comet. The supplies were not included in the crate and the girls had enough for one day but I would love to make the comet another time. My sisters and sisters-in-law all told me that their girls had a blast (no pun intended) and that they chatted on and on about everything they did!

Hello, I'm Tonia. Welcome to The Gunny Sack, my online place to inspire others through recipes, crafts and tutorials.

When I saw that first Tonia, I thought you were getting a whole crate full of kiwi fruit. What a great idea. I wish we got things like that here. The kids would love it. A lot of fun.
