DIY Autumn Leaf Feathers

Have the leaves in your area changed? We still have some left on the trees but many of them are bare already. Today I used a few of the leaves from my yard to make some feathers. These were so easy to make that I’m sure you don’t need a tutorial but I made one anyway.

Find some pretty leaves from in your yard. These ones were already dry and crispy.
First, cut the edges off the leaves. Second, make small diagonal cuts along the sides of the leaves without cutting through the midrib (the vein that runs along the center of the leaf). The way the scissors are positioned is not correct but I was trying to hold the scissors and take the picture. I actually made the cuts in the opposite direction. Third, enjoy your beautiful leaf feathers!
I’m not sure what I am going to use mine for yet but this would be a fun Thanksgiving craft project for kids! I can picture these three feathers tucked into a child’s hat or headband.
I hope you have a great weekend! Make sure you stop back on Monday morning because my birthday is next week and I have a fun giveaway planned!
Due to stolen content, I have found it necessary to only show a snippet of my blog posts in my feed. Thank you for understanding that I want to keep the content I work hard to create on my website where it is originally published: thegunnysack.com

  2. I haven’t seen that before I like it.

  3. Pinned this, what a great idea!

    • Thanks Bliss! I made them really quickly to enter a photo contest. I had 45 minutes to take and upload a picture of 3 feathers of any kind but I didn’t have any feather in my house. Needless to say, I lost to a snapshot of 3 pumpkins with feathers sticking up off the back but I liked these leaf feathers so I decided to share! :)

  4. Oh I love these Tonia! I was wondering if there was a way to preserve them after they are cut.

    • Thanks Danni! I’m not sure how long they will last. These ones were already dry when I cut them. I suppose they could be preserved in the same way other leaves can be preserved.

  5. Great idea! We don’t have many mature trees in our neighborhood to find a lot of leaves but this would be fun if we did!

  6. They remind me of turkey feathers. Wonder if there is a cute turkey out there waiting to be made…
