Kitchen Flooring Makeover

If you could renovate any room in your home which room would you choose? For me that room would be the kitchen. There are parts of my kitchen I like and other parts that need to go. My favorite things are the countertops and the set of glass fronted cabinets. One of my least favorite things is that the bottom cabinets are brownish and the upper cabinets are red. I prefer more of a uniform look but that is how they were when we moved in. I am really liking the look of the gray island in this picture. I think I would like the cabinets to be that shade of gray! Another change I would make would be to add an island. For right now I have a makeshift island in place.

I found this tablelike island on Better Homes and Gardens. I like that it is open on the bottom. I have a smaller kitchen and the open space would keep the kitchen from looking cramped. I also saw a really cute dresser island which would be narrow but also provide more storage space!

But the thing that I want to change the most in my kitchen is the flooring! Right now my kitchen has white tile which is fine but the grout came loose and the previous owners used white caulk to fill in the spaces. You can imagine how white caulk looks in a much used kitchen! Plus, some of the caulk has come out so there are big gaps between the tiles. Additional caulk was left on top of the tiles. I’ve tried scraping the caulk off the top of the tiles with a razor blade but haven’t removed all of it yet so my kitchen floor always looks dirty. Since this is a rental house, it is more difficult to do renovations for many reasons. When we built our previous house, we laid the tile ourselves. Well, my husband did most of it but I helped do the entryway and hallway. My biggest tip is to have patience! Laying tile correctly takes a lot of time. Do the prep work and premeasure everything!

So, what would I replace it with? I went to website called Floor and Decor to check out their selection of low priced flooring that is an affordable option for renovation. They have porcelain, ceramic, stone, tile, wood and laminate flooring. ”My first thought was that I would replace the current white tile with a tan ceramic tile. After looking through the ceramic tile choices, I found this Himalaya Noce Ceramic Tile. The color is described as “earth tones”. I like that description because the tile has more than one color in it so it wouldn’t constantly look dirty. But the color might not provide enough contrast with gray cabinets.

After checking out the tile, I noticed that Floor and Decor has the best selection in hardwood! Although the tile is super durable and easy to clean, I would like to have hardwood again. We choose a cherry colored hardwood for our last home and I loved it! But if I were able to paint the cabinets gray, then I would like a dark gray or almost black hardwood. I really like the look of this African Mahogany Solid Hardwood.

Then again, this Coastal White Oak Solid Hardwood would look great too! It reminds me of a cottage on the beach! I would wait until I had the exact shade of gray picked out for the cabinets before choosing which hardwood to get.

  1. I’ve read that the dark wood can get really dirty looking really fast. I like oak flooring (not 80s oak, but the less orange version) because it goes with everything.

But I think for a kitchen, hardwood isn’t always the best choice. I’ve been in several kitchens with rotten wood flooring around the appliances (because of water), so I think I’d pick something more amenable to being wet. I’m even a fan of real linoleum because it’s non-toxic and durable (as opposed to vinyl, which is nasty stuff).

    • I know what you mean about the dark hardwood! I was so worried about the dark cherry hardwood when we put it in our second home. But my husband really wanted it and I ended up loving it! I just used my Swiffer a lot! Thankfully, ours held up really well and didn’t get water damage but that is a concern in a kitchen!

  2. I absolutely LOVE those green cabinets. I’ve never leaned toward green, who knew…

  3. love the cherry- my mom actually did her kitchen over in the last year and did a bamboo flooring- looks amazing!! I like the “open” island you shared- so pretty!

  4. Have you seen the ceramic tile that is rectangle and looks like wood? It’s totally AWESOME….and pretty pricey. :( I want it though! lol

  5. Oh, I would definitely choose my kitchen for an all our renovation. I would love to redo the floors on my entire main level to all hardwoods. You picked some great flooring options.
