{Family Project} GE Bringing Choices To Light

As you know, I really enjoy photography! I use my our Nikon D200 everyday. Most of the time I am using it for something blog related but I try to use it for fun things too. But I’m not sure if you know that my husband and kids love photography as well. My kids have been using digital cameras and even those disposable film cameras since they were little. My daughter Christine is currently enrolled in a photography class in college. Vanessa has won a blue ribbon the past two year for the photos she as taken for a school contest. And Zack is just getting started but on Monday I shared a picture that he took of me holding a mug of coffee and he thought it was fun! Well, the biggest factor is any photo is the lighting! I’ve heard it said that photography means “drawing with light”. The kind, the amount, the color and the quality of the lighting can make all the difference. I was given the challenge of creating a project that involved my kids and GE Lighting. We decided to compare and contrast the differences between two types of GE bulbs to see which would be the best for taking photos. As part of my partnership with GE, I received coupons for my GE light bulbs. All opinions posted about my GE Lighting experience are my own.

My oldest child, Christine, will be shooting with the Nikon D200.

Although my middle child, Vanessa, would rather be using the D200, but has agreed to use the Canon PowerShot SX130 IS for the sake of science.

Zack, who recently asked what hierarchy meant only to come to the conclusion that as the baby of the family he is at the bottom of our family hierarchy, had to settle for the Panasonic Lumix.

We went shopping at Walmart to gather the supplies for our project. You can see more about our shopping trip in my Google+ Album. Our plan is to make a light box or soft box and set up a photo booth of sorts. I’m not sure how we are going to do it yet but we till try a few different things until we come up with something that works. Then, using different bulbs and various cameras we will see which bulb gives us the best result.

We will be comparing the color of the light, the strength/brightness of the light and how if affect the image, functionality, ease of use and cost per bulb. In addition, we will be using the energy savings calculator from at GE Lighting to compare the saving each type of bulb generates. We plan to compile our findings and then share the results with you.

Did you know that new lighting legislation in January will change what light bulbs can be manufactured and sold? Standard incandescent light bulbs are required to use 30% less energy and therefore manufacturers simply can’t manufacture certain bulbs as time goes on. There are 3 different GE lighting technology choices available at Walmart. GE Energy Smart CFLs which use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last more than 7 years. GE Energy Efficient Soft White bulbs, the closest alternative to traditional incandescent bulbs, use 28% less energy than incandescent bulbs. And GE Engery Smart LEDs which use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last up to 22 years!
