Only 2 days until school starts! We’ve got the school supplies. We’ve got the school lunch items. We’ve met the teachers. Now, we need some after school snacks! I remember when I was a child, I loved coming home to a warm, homemade treat. Of course that didn’t happen every day but we sure enjoyed it when it did happen. I try to do the same for my kids, although those homemade treats are few and far between. Instead, I try to have convenient after school snacks on hand.
One of our favorite after school snacks is microwave popcorn. I like that it is an easy to make, healthy snack as long as I buy the light style popcorn. It is one of the things I like to stock up on and I love that it doesn’t take up much room in the cupboards compared to something like a bag of chips. The kids like it because they can have an entire bowl full!
My girls enjoy making themselves baked potatoes as an after school snack. They wash the outside of the potato, poke holes in it with a fork and place it in a microwave safe bowl with about a quarter inch of water on the bottom. They cover the bowl with a plate and microwave the potato until soft. The amount of time it takes to cook depends on the size of the potato and the kind of microwave but my girls just push the Baked Potato button on the microwave.
Some other easy after school snacks are pretzels, crackers & cheese, fruit, veggies & dip, string cheese, nuts and yogurt. After school snacks and lunch box items can get expensive so to save money, purchase snack items in bulk and repackage them into individual sized servings. Also, look for sales and combine the sales with coupon. Another idea is to use home made items such as cookies or pizza sticks like in the picture above.
