chocolate chip scone
Is your New Year’s Resolution to lose weight?  That was my resolution 2 years ago and I lost 20 lbs by limiting sugar.  Do you ever use sugar alternatives?  My favorite is Truvia!  I’ve been using it for 2 years now and still love it.  One of the ways I use Truvia is to make my Chocolate Chip Scones.

scone ingredients

Put the flour, baking soda, salt and Truvia in a bowl and cut a stick of butter into the mixture.

ingredients in bowl

Add sour cream, egg, vanilla and chocolate chips.  Mix until just combined and then knead a few times.  The less you handle the dough the better!

two circles of dough

Divide dough in half and gently form into 2 circles on a greased cookie sheet.  Cut into 8 wedges but do not separate them.

baked scones

Bake for about 14 minutes until golden brown.

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup Truvia (or another sugar alternative)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold butter
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/3 cups sugar free chocolate chips

  2. Cut butter into slices and add to flour mixture. Cut into the flour mixture.

  4. Mix with a fork until dough comes together. DO NOT overmix.
  5. Gather the dough into a lump and gently knead 5 or 6 times.

So maybe I do something wrong when I make these. I’ve made these 4 or 5 times now and they turn out tasting so good, even my husband and toddler love it! However I end up adding about 1/2 cup or more of almond milk to it because when I’m kneading it together it’s just not moist enough at all, it’s crumbly and falls apart. I make sure to follow the directions to a T thinking I must be missing something but every time I end up adding vanilla almond milk. Oh well, it still comes out super tasty!!

I’m happy you found a way to make them work for you! I’ve made these so many times without any issues but thanks for the tip because other readers may have run into the same problem!

I love Truvia, it is the only sweetener I use. I bake with it and I use it in my espresso latte every morning. I would spend the $25 on craft supplies so I can make more fun things to post on your site :)www.craftingrebellion.com

Liked you! 😉 I would definitely try this recipe first and then just keep baking with the Truvia. With the gift card, I’d buy little things for the “Everything in a Jar” gifts for my boys’ teachers!
