Looking for homemade gift ideas? I will show you how to make Pink Grapefruit Lip Balm
using coconut oil, beeswax, sweet almond oil and essential oil.

Pink Grapefruit Lip Balm in containers

I’ve wanted to try making lip balm for so long now. It looked easy enough to make but I never got around to making it. My sister-in-law is getting married in May and I wanted to give her some lip balm to go along with a homemade Scented Lotion Bar and Grapefruit Sugar Scrub. So, I made Pink Grapefruit Lip Balm and gave her all three items as part of her bridal shower gift.

Lip Balm supplies

Here are the ingredients I used to make the lip balm. I added the essential oil after I melted the other ingredients together.

1/2 tablespoon coconut oil
1/2 tablespoon white beeswax pellets
1/2 tablespoon sweet almond oil
1/2 inch piece of red lip balm (for color)

bees wax and lip balm in bowl

Put all of the ingredients in a heat-proof bowl and melt over a pan of simmering water (a double boiler). Once it is melted, working quickly, add several drops of essential oil for scent and flavor. I used about 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil to give it a summery, citrus feel.

fill containers with syringe

Again, working quickly, before the wax cools, fill small containers or lip balm tubes. I used a large syringe to neatly fill the containers. (I bought these small, plastic containers from Amazon.) Immediately wipe the glass bowl and the syringe clean while the wax is still warm and pliable. If you wait until it hardens, just warm the bowl up again to soften the wax.

Lip Balm Hearts

I wanted to add a little decoration to the tops of the lip balm. So, I melted together 1 teaspoon beeswax, 1 teaspoon coconut oil and 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil. Fill the clean syringe and quickly pipe small hearts onto a piece of waxed paper.

Once the hearts have hardened, peel them off of the waxed paper, set them on the lip balm and gently press in place.

This recipe made enough for me to make four mini lip balms. I love Burt’s Bees lip balm so I think I am going to try a peppermint version next time I make lip balm!

Would I be able to use a bit of food coloring instead of the chapstick? I would like to stick to basic ingredients, if possible.

I’m not sure how well the food coloring would mix in since it is a liquid. Let us know if you try it!

Without the wax it’s won’t harden.

Christina, I’m not the author, but I don’t think the coconut oil and colored balm will finish as a solid like this will with beeswax.

Tonia, this is a really cool recipe. I was wondering if the little containers can be bought in small quantities on Amazon? And more importantly, any suggestions on doing this without a syringe? I wouldn’t know where I could find one if those. Thanks!

      Hi Sue,
Thanks! I only saw them in large quantities. I would check a craft store and look for small organization containers for beads. As far as the syringe goes, you can just pour it into the containers. I bought the syringe at my small local grocery store. It is supposed to be used for injecting flavor. Happy crafting!

If I was in a pinch for a small gift like the lip balm, could I skip the bee wax and just use coconut oil with the grapefruit essential oil? What is the reason for the bee wax? Thank you in advance.

      Hi Christina,
I’m not sure if it would work. I love Burt’s Bees lip balm so I wanted beeswax in it. I think it helps the lip balm harden. Coconut oil will liquify much easier than beeswax.
