    dipping calzone in pizza sauce

One of my family’s favorite meals is pizza, especially the guys in the family. We enjoy it in all sorts of forms from grilled pizza and pizza balls to stromboli and pizza sticks.

These two ingredient dough calzones are another way of enjoying pizza but instead of a flat slice, it is folded up into a delicious pocket.

Where is the Two Ingredient Dough Calzones recipe? In this post, I will share step-by-step photos for how to make the calzones, as well as answering FAQs about the recipe. But you can go directly to the recipe by scrolling down to the bottom of the post.

    What Is Two Ingredient Dough?

Two ingredient dough is a simple combination of self-rising flour and Greek yogurt. I first heard about it from a friend who was going to weight watchers and learned about two ingredient bagels.

Recipes made with two ingredient dough have become wildly popular because not only are they easy to make, they are low in Weight Watchers Smart Points since plain, fat-free Greek yogurt is one of the zero points foods on the freestyle program.

self-rising flour and Greek yogurt in a mixing bowl

Put the self-rising flour and plain, fat-free Greek yogurt in the bowl of a stand mixer with the attachment meant for mixing dough.

Do you have a recipe for self-rising flour?

For one cup of self-rising flour, whisk together one cup of all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Please note that this blog post was made using store-bought self-rising flour. If you choose to make your own, your results may vary and you’ll have to make adjustments.

What brand of plain, fat-free Greek yogurt do you recommend?

Use whatever kind is available at your local grocery store. I’ve made two ingredient dough with Fage, Oikos, and the store brand and haven’t noticed a difference.

Do I have to use plain, fat-free, Greek yogurt for this recipe?

I’ve only ever made two-ingredient dough calzones with plain, fat-free Greek yogurt. That being said, readers have told me that they’ve successfully used full fat, 2% or 5% Greek yogurt. One woman even told me that she used sour cream. But their results varied and they have to make adjustments in flour measurements and baking times.

soft pretzel dough in mixer bowl

Mix at a low speed until combined. Then, knead at medium speed for about 3 minutes. After three minutes, a ball of dough should’ve formed.

What should I do if my dough is too sticky or wet?

If your dough is too sticky or wet, knead in a little more flour at a time until it is workable. That being said, this dough tends to be a stickier dough. I just sprinkle a little flour on it if sticks to my fingers and continue shaping it.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and sprinkle with additional flour. Knead the dough a couple of times and form it into a log.

Can I make these two ingredient dough calzones without a stand mixer?

Yes, you can make the dough for the calzones without a stand mixer. Stir the self-rising flour and Greek yogurt together until combined. Turn it out onto a well-floured surface and knead until smooth adding more flour as needed.

Cut the log of dough into six slices.

sauce, pepperoni, and shredded cheese on an oval of dough

Top with pizza sauce, slices of pepperoni, and shredded mozzarella cheese. Fold the empty half of the dough up over the filling.

What other fillings do you suggest for two ingredient dough calzones?

The great thing about calzones is that you can add any fillings you like! Think about your favorite pizza toppings and use those. Try sausage, Canadian bacon, chicken, black olives, peppers, onions, and mushrooms.

Then, fold up the edges of the dough and press to seal.

    brushing with egg white

Transfer the two ingredient dough calzones to a baking sheet and brush with beaten egg white.

    calzones sprinkled with spices

Sprinkle the calzones with grated parmesan cheese, garlic salt, and Italian seasoning.

    baked calzones

Bake the calzones until golden brown.

But WAIT…I count MORE than two ingredients

Yes, this recipe has several ingredients but the DOUGH is made with only two ingredients: self-rising flour and Greek yogurt. To simplify the title of the recipe it is called: TWO INGREDIENT DOUGH Calzones. Meaning calzones made with two ingredient dough.

    Self Rising Flour,

    • 1 cup plain fat-free Greek yogurt
    • 6 tablespoon pizza sauce
    • 30 slices pepperoni

    • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
    • ⅛ teaspoon garlic salt

    • Put the self-rising flour (1 cup plus 2 tablespoons) and plain, fat-free Greek yogurt in the bowl of a stand mixer with the dough hook attachment.

    • Flatten each piece into an oval. Spread pizza sauce over half of each oval. Top each one with 5 slices of pepperoni, a tablespoon of shredded mozzarella, and Italian seasoning.
    • Fold the empty half of the dough over to cover the filling. Then, fold the edges over and press to seal. Place on a baking sheet.
    • Brush with beaten egg whites. Sprinkle with parmesan, Italian seasoning, and garlic salt.

I absolutely love the 2 ingredient dough…so much easier than waiting for traditional dough to rise!! When I make pizzas with it, I add garlic and onion granules and dried oregano and basil to the flour before I start mixing…takes the edge off the ever so slightly yoghurty flavour….yum!

Can these be frozen? Is it better to freeze before baking, partly baked or after baking?
      Thanks

        The *dough* is 2 ingredients.
It doesn’t say “2 ingredient calzones.”
