This Nutella Chocolate Torte recipe is a chocolate layer cake filled with a Nutella mousse that is sure to impress!

    Nutella Chocolate Torte Recipe

Last fall, I made a Pumpkin Torte that was not only impressive to look at but it was also delicious to eat! That dessert came to mind when I was trying to decide what to make for a Mother’s Day dessert.

I want to make something that the moms would love and I know that most women love chocolate so I combined the two and threw in some Nutella for good measure. This Nutella Chocolate Torte recipe is easy to make and I could happily consume the Nutella mousse filling every day!

    Chocolate Nutella Cake Batter

Start by making two 9 inch cakes. Mix together Nutella, eggs, milk and oil. Then add one Pillsbury German Chocolate cake mix

Stir for 30 seconds on low and then beat for 2 minutes on high. Pour into two greased 9-inch pans and bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes.

    Chocolate Nutella Torte Filling

While the cakes are baking, make the Nutella mousse. Beat softened cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add Nutella, sugar and vanilla.

Beat until smooth. Fold in a large container of whipped topping. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

    Chocolate Cake

Allow the cakes to cool for a few minutes in the pan before removing them to a wire rack to finish cooling. Cut the cakes in half horizontally.

    Four Layer Cake

Place one of the cake rounds on a platter. I used an upside-down ceramic baking dish to make transporting the dessert a little easier. Spread 1/4 of the Nutella mousse onto each of the layers.

    Drizzle Chocolate Layer Cake

Melt Pillsbury milk chocolate in the microwave and then drizzle the melted chocolate onto the cake, allowing it to run down the sides. I am not the world’s best drizzler, so luckily there are chocolate curls to cover the top!

    Chocolate Curls On Cake

To make the chocolate curls, I started with a 4.25 oz Symphony chocolate candy bar. I softened it for a few seconds in the microwave. Then, I turned the candy bar on its side and ran a vegetable peeler along the edge. Top with chocolate curls.

Everyone was impressed with the cake. It was surprisingly light rather than overwhelmingly rich. Next time, I would like to try adding some coffee to the recipe!

Moms love sweet things and you have chosen right present to give her. I think your topping can be replace by creams or chocolate candies. However, our recipe is very nice.

Hi. This recipe looks awesome!!! I was wondering if you can give me a suggestion on what to substitute the cream cheese with? I really don’t like cheese in my desserts, so was looking for something that would complement this recipe that wasn’t cream cheese. Any ideas?? Thanks for posting!! Hope to try this soon.

        Hi Yanira,
I don’t know of a substitute, but you could try making a mousse using Nutella and heavy cream. It would not have the same stability that this cream cheese version has but it would taste great. Happy Baking!

Well.. guess what??? I won!! The dessert was a HUGE success and I won $100! Thank you for the recipe! I did add fanned strawberries to the top of the cake for a little color. I also added Nutella to the chocolate drizzle. I only used about 9 ounces of the whipped cream too! It was PERFECT!!!! YUM!!!

My daughter, a HUGE Nutella fan was given a Jar from a friend at school for Christmas. I don’t buy it because of the calorie count. LOL!! I am making this AMAZING cake today for a Holiday Dessert Contest! I will let you know how it goes! I can’t wait to taste it!!!

How come you chose to use a German chocolate cake mix? Why not regular chocolate, or devil’s chocolate, etc.?

        Hi Em,
Any one of them would work. I wanted a lighter flavor so I went with German this time.
Here is what I found from Heloise online:
A regular chocolate cake mix is flavored with milk chocolate.
A devil’s-food cake is richer and darker, and has a strong cocoa flavor.
German chocolate usually is a lighter-colored cake with a flavor of mild chocolate.
        Happy Baking!

        Hi Amie,
Whipped topping is store bought whipped cream like Cool Whip. I’m not sure if homemade whipped cream would hold up as well in the cake but if you try it out I would love to hear how it worked. Best of luck!
