    Tonia’s Notes

I have such fond memories of making Christmas cookies as a kid! Every year, we make several different kinds of cookies and candies to enjoy and share with family and friends.

These sugar cookies with sprinkles are made with my old-fashioned sugar cookie dough, so they are soft and light! They are so easy to make, and you don’t have to refrigerate the dough before baking them. If you want to make them over-the-top delicious, you can add buttercream frosting too!

    Make Ahead and Storage Tips

    • Make Ahead: You can make and freeze the dough balls ahead of time. When ready to bake, remove the sprinkle sugar cookie dough balls and let them thaw on a baking sheet at room temperature for 20 minutes before baking.
    • Room Temperature: Allow the cookies to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
    • Freezer: You can store Christmas sugar cookies with sprinkles in an airtight container in the freezer for 3-4 weeks. This is perfect for the busy holiday season!

    • ½ cup salted butter softened
    • ¾ cup (150 grams) granulated sugar

    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 ¾ cups (210 grams) all-purpose flour spoon into measuring cups and level with the back of a knife
    • ½ teaspoon baking soda
    • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • 1 ¼ cups sprinkles, divided

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 350˚F. Use a mixer to beat the butter and 3/4 cup of granulated sugar for 2-3 minutes until lighter in color and fluffier in texture.

    • In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt. Stir into the batter until combined.
    • Add 1/4 cup of the sprinkles and stir until combined.
    • Scoop with a #60 (about one tablespoon) cookie dough scoop, coat them with the sprinkles, and roll them into a ball shape.
    • Place them on parchment-lined baking sheets. Use the flat bottom of a glass to slightly flatten each ball of dough.
    • Bake at 350˚F for 7-9 minutes. The bottoms of the cookies should be lightly browned, but the tops should not be.
