    Tonia’s Notes

There’s something irresistible about the crispy, flaky layers of puff pastry! I love how versatile it is and how easy it is to use. Plus, the fact that I can buy it premade.

These simple puff pastry cookies look impressive but only take minutes to prepare. You can make them year-round by using plain sugar or by choosing a color to match the occasion.

    How To Make

    Step one button.

    Red Sugar Sprinkles

Cover a piece of parchment paper with half of the red sugar sprinkles. Lay your puff pastry on the sugar and top with the remaining sugar. Press the sugar into the puff pastry. I like to use disposable gloves for this step to prevent my hands from getting stained red. If the sugar won’t stick, spray the dough with a little cooking spray and then try again.

    Step two button.

    Fold And Slice

Fold the short ends of the dough twice to meet in the middle. Then, fold one half over the other so that you have six layers. Cut the dough into slices.

    Fold the dough.
    Step three button.

    Baking Sheet

Place the slices on parchment-lined baking sheets in opposite directions with the cut side up. Leave plenty of space between them because they will expand a lot while baking. Bake at 400˚F for 10-12 minutes.

Add to a parchment covered baking sheet.
    Step four button.

    Dip In Chocolate

After the puff pastry cookies have cooled, you can decorate them. Melt white candy coating wafers in one bowl and semi-sweet chocolate chips with a little shortening in a second bowl. Dip one half of each heart-shaped cookie, place it on a sheet of parchment paper, and top with sprinkles.

    Recipe Tips

    • Storage: Store these heart-shaped Palmier puff pastry cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days or in the freezer for 1-2 months.
    • Puff Pastry: We used Pepperidge Farm frozen puff pastry to make this recipe but also tested the Jus-Rol brand. They both work great but the resulting cookies were different shapes and sizes.
    • Sugar: There were enough red sugar sprinkles in one container to cover the dough. If you use a different brand, you may need more than one container. You can also use plain sugar, or tint sugar yourself with food coloring.

    Equipment

    • Disposable Gloves
    • Parchment Paper Sheets
    • USA Pan Cookie Sheet

    Ingredients

    • ⅓ cup red sugar sprinkles
    • 1 sheet puff pastry

    Decorations

    • ½ cup white melting wafers
    • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 1 teaspoon shortening
    • Valentine's Day sprinkles

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 400˚F. Spread half of the colored sugar on a piece of parchment paper. Place the puff pastry sheet on top of the sugar, sprinkle the remaining half of the colored sugar on top, and gently press the sugar onto the puff pastry. I like to wear disposable gloves for this step. If the sugar won't stick, moisten the dough with cooking spray.
    • Fold the short ends of the puff pastry twice to meet in the center of the dough. Then, fold one half over the other. At this point, you should have six layers. Cut the dough into slices and arrange them in opposite directions on parchment-lined baking sheets with the cut sides up.
    • Bake at 400˚F for 10-13 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool.
    • Melt the white candy coating in a small bowl in the microwave. Melt the chocolate chips and shortening in a second bowl. Dip one side of a cookie in the melted candy coating or chocolate, place it on a piece of parchment paper, and top with sprinkles. Repeat with the remaining cookies.
