valentine's day pencils
Everyone needs something for writing love notes at this time of the year, right?  Actually, Vanessa painted these pencils before Christmas and planned to make candy cane toppers for them but never finished.  When I found them in a box in the closet, I realized that they are the perfect colors for Valentine’s Day Pencils!

painting pencils pink
She started by painting some pencils red and silver.  Vanessa used metallic bright red and silver extreme glitter paint.  It got a little hard to paint the pencils by just holding one end so we stuck the eraser end in a large piece of foam.  Vanessa painted the rest of them while they were sticking out of the foam.  The pencils needed a couple of coats of paint and she let them dry completely between coats.

shaping pipe cleaners
Then, we made hearts and spirals out of silver and red pipe cleaners.  The spirals are fun because they are kind of springy and they wobble around when you write.  Twist the small tail, on the pipe cleaner shape, around the end of the pencil.  We used some hot glue to help hold the pipe cleaners in place.

Now, all we need are some mini notebooks and these will be a cute Valentine’s Day gifts.  You will just have to picture how cute one of these pencils would look on a mini notebook though because it is dangerously cold and windy here so I am not going to venture out to buy any!  For all of those who live in warmer climates, you probably can’t imagine how cold it can get here in Minnesota!  We’ve had a really warm winter so far but not this week.  The kids have had indoor recess all week because it is too cold to let them be outside even for a few minutes with all of their snow gear on!

But the good news is that it is supposed to warm up again this weekend!  Yay!  And we will be able to make it to the store without fear of frostbite!  So for now, we are going to stay warm & cozy inside and hopefully do some crafting and baking!

I love these and can’t wait to make them with my daughter for her class. Love reading about the cold I completely understand. I live in upper Alberta Canada, where winter lasts 6 months and a wind chill of -40 isn’t uncommon. Thanks for the tip on the little note pads will be doing that forsure!

Thanks Amanda! They are going to love it! This week has been fairly warm here so we are enjoying it but the forecast says things are going to be “frigid” next week!

This is such a great idea! We try to limit how much candy we give to all of H’s friends and this is a fantastic alternative.
