Puppy chow is a popular treat year-round, so why not make a patriotic version for summer? You can bring this to summer celebrations or take it along on a road trip!

    Tonia’s Notes

These white chocolate and peanut butter covered Rice Chex are called puppy chow in the Midwest, even though they are for humans, not dogs. Another popular name is Muddy Buddies. But no matter what you call them, they are delicious!

How To Make Red White and Blue Puppy Chow

This patriotic puppy chow recipe is really easy to make with only a few ingredients, but you have to make it in three small batches to get the red, white, and blue colors.

    • Measure three cups of Rice Chex into a medium bowl.
    • Put a portion of the white chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and butter in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it in the microwave until you can stir it smooth.
    • Stir in the gel food coloring and vanilla extract.
    • Pour the mixture over the cereal in the bowl and stir until it is coated.
    • Transfer the cereal to a gallon-sized ziptop bag and add the powdered sugar. Seal the bag and shake until the cereal is coated with the sugar.

    • Spread the puppy chow out on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool.
    • Repeat the process until you have red, white, and blue puppy chow on the baking sheet.
    • Once it is cool, melt white chocolate chips and shortening in the microwave and drizzle it over the puppy chow.
    • Top it with patriotic nonpareil sprinkles and silver star sprinkles.

    Make Ahead and Storage

    • Make Ahead: This is the perfect recipe to make ahead of time and bring to summer celebrations!
    • Refrigerator: Once the red, white, and blue puppy chow has cooled and the coating is set, store it in an airtight container or storage bag in a cool, dry place for 5-7 days or in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
    • Freezer: You can also store it in the freezer for 1-2 months.
