This basic Cinnamon Sugar recipe makes a simple topping that can be used on everything from toast to doughnuts and pretzels to funnel cake.

Cinnamon sugar is a pantry staple and although you can buy it in the store it is so easy to mix up yourself that there is no need to purchase it already mixed.

    How To Make Cinnamon Sugar

    ingredients and supplies

For supplies, you’ll need a bowl for mixing. I like using a glass measuring cup as a mixing bowl since it has a pouring spout and a handle.

You’ll also need a whisk and an airtight container for storage. I like storing it in a glass spice jar with a shaker lid.

What is cinnamon sugar made of?

It is made of a mixture of white granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.

Can you use brown sugar instead of white?

Yes, you can make brown sugar cinnamon by substituting an equal amount of brown sugar.

    whisking mixture

What is the ratio of cinnamon to sugar?

The perfect ratio is 4 teaspoons of ground cinnamon to 1/2 cup of granulated sugar.

    • For a strong cinnamon flavor, add two additional teaspoons of cinnamon.
    • If you want a light cinnamon flavor, add only three teaspoons of ground cinnamon.

Pour the mixture into a glass spice jar. If you made the mixture in a measuring cup, use the spout on the cup. Otherwise a small funnel is really helpful.

How long does cinnamon sugar last?

Cinnamon sugar will last up to 2 years in a properly stored, airtight container as long as you start with freshly purchased/opened ingredients.

Add a label to the front of the jar and the date to the bottom of the jar so that you can remember what is in the spice jar and when the mixture was made.

What is cinnamon sugar used for?

Cinnamon sugar is used as a topping on everything from snack toast to donuts and popcorn to pretzels. It can be used when baking cinnamon rolls or as a coating for toasted pecans.

When our kids were young, we would use it to make them “star shaped toast” when they were under the weather. It would encourage them to eat a little and always put a smile on their faces.
