Homemade Peppermint Patties are so easy to make and more delicious than the store bought ones! Cool and minty on the inside with smooth chocolate on the outside, they are a Christmas holiday tradition.

    homemade peppermint patties

Silpat and Roul’Pat provided by Sasa Demarle. Inc in return for sharing this recipe.

Although peppermint patties can be enjoyed year round, they really shine during the holidays. My sister was the inspiration for sharing these peppermint patties. She makes them every year and they are one of my favorite treats. There have even been some years where she has tucked some into my Christmas gift!

treats line up on a silpat

Before getting started I want to tell you about the Roul’Pat and the Silpat. They are both kitchen tools that I use weekly. Either one would be the perfect gift for the bakers in your life.

The Roul’Pat is covered with silicone on both sides making it a non-stick countertop workstation that won’t slide while you are working. It is perfect for kneading and rolling out dough or pie crust, as well as working with fondant, chocolate and sugar. It is safe in the temperature range of  -40°F to 480°F so it can go in the oven. The Roul’Pat can also be used for hobbies or crafts like painting, gluing or working with modeling clay.

The Silpat is a non-stick baking mat that provides even heat transfer to baked goods with no greasing required! It is effective in temperatures from -40°F to 480°F or -40°C to 280°C. The non-stick surface is also great for putting chocolate dipped items on it, like these peppermint patties, rather than putting them on parchment.

    How To Make Peppermint Patties

dough for the filling of the dessert

    Step One: Dough

To make the peppermint patties, mix together 2 tablespoons of the half-n-half (know as half cream in some countries), melted coconut oil, corn syrup, lemon juice, peppermint extract, and vanilla extract.

Mix in powdered sugar one cup at a time. Add an additional tablespoon or two of half-n-half, until you can form a ball with the dough.

round cookie cutter cutting out the dough for the patties

Step Two: Roll Out and Cut Out

Roll out the dough into a circle about 1/4 inch thick on a silicone mat. Place dough in the freezer for about 15 minutes until firm.

Use a small circle cookie cutter (I used a two inch size cutter) to cut out peppermint patties. Return them to the freezer for about 10 minutes.

Gather the scraps of peppermint patty dough, form a ball and repeat the freezing and cutting of patties until all of the dough has been used.

dough being coated with candiquik chocolate coating

    Step Three: Dip

Melt chocolate candy coating (such as CandiQuik) or chocolate almond bark in the microwave. Working in batches, remove several peppermint patties from the freezer coat them in chocolate.

    stack of homemade peppermint patties

    Step Four: Garnish

Place a chocolate coated peppermint patty on a silicone mat and sprinkle it with crushed candy canes, peppermint candies, or peppermint bark. Continue with remaining peppermint patties.

holiday treats stacked in a cellophane bag

To give these homemade camndies as a gift, stack up several of the peppermint patties and place them in a cellophane bag. Tie with a piece of baker’s twine. They would also be the perfect thing for a cookie exchange!

    patties in a stack

My husband took one bite and said, “WOW, these are REALLY good!” My son told me they are the best peppermint patties he’s ever had and that they are way better than the ones from the store.

        Hi Lorraine,
I’m not sure what it is called in Australia but it is a mixture of milk and light cream with a fat content of 10.5 to 12 percent. Here is a great blog post that explains it: http://culinaryarts.about.com/od/glossary/g/Half-And-Half.htm

My daughter (12) and I had a lot of fun making these…and they actually do taste like the peppermint patty’s you buy in the store. One struggle we had, the melted CandyQuik chocolate is so hot it was hard to keep the mint patty from melting. If you let the chocolate cool, it then became to thick to work with. Any advise? We made a pretty big mess trying to get them to look like yours LOL.

Just stick them in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes first. I haven’t made these, but it’s the same thing that happens when you make truffles. Just be careful about freezing them all the way because it can make your chocolate crack as they cool. But get them nice and cold.

Hello! I would use white shortening or butter. Palm shortening would work as well but my palm shortening is very yellow and I think that it would make the dough yellow. Happy baking! ~Tonia

Really easy to make and delicious! This is the best recipe. I added more peppermint and whipping cream instead of half and half. It made it a little easier to roll out. I rolled it out before I froze it and it worked out better with the warm chocolate! Excellent recipe’!

        Hi Claudie,
Half n half is a dairy product. In some countries, it is called half cream. It has more fat than whole milk, but less fat than heavy whipped cream. You can substitute other dairy for the half n half if it isn’t sold in your country, but you might have to adjust the amount slightly depending on how thick the dairy product is. Happy Baking!

I’ve never tried it with another liquid but I think that it would work with another “thick” dairy product like whipping cream, evaporated milk or maybe even coffee creamer. Enjoy! ~Tonia

Yes, the one I used was about 2 inches and the recipe made about 25 peppermint patties. You can use whatever size cookie cutter you want. The smaller the cookie cutter the more peppermint patties you will get. It will also depend on how thick you roll out the batter. Happy baking! ~Tonia

Have you ever dipped in something other than candiquik? I really love dark chocolate, is there something else along those lines that you know of that I could use for dipping?

Yes, you can dip it in whatever chocolate you want. For dark chocolate, melt dark chocolate chips in the microwave with vegetable shortening. You need 1 tablespoon of shortening for 1 cup of chocolate chips. Enjoy! ~Tonia

        Hi Amy,
I went back and looked at my original recipe in my notebook to double check and this is how it is written. But it sounds like you need more moisture is your dough. I would suggest adding an additional tablespoon of half-n-half. Best of luck!

Just a question: coconut oil is so bad health-wise (super low heating point and all trans fat); have you tried any other oil for this recipe and how did it turn out?

I think you are confusing the coconut oil most widely available in stores today with the hydrogenated stuff of the 80s. Not to mention there is only 1 T. of it in this recipe.

Hi there. I followed to this recipe after checking out a pumpkin one someone posted on FB. I love all things peppermint and things like this that are great for gift giving. Since I live in Mexico, it is really hard to find coconut oil here so I was wondering if you had a recommendation on what would be the best substitute. Thanks!
