Homemade Chocolate Covered Strawberries are the ultimate treat! They look beautiful on a serving platter and can be given as a gift.

I shared a recipe for white chocolate covered strawberries way back in 2013 and decided that I should also share how to make chocolate covered strawberries. These strawberries are easy to make and perfect for a special occasion!

fresh strawberries in a plastic crate

Start with a container of strawberries. Rinse the strawberries and then dry them very well. Dry strawberries are the key to have the melted chocolate stick well!

It can be hard to find ripe, fresh strawberries at certain times of the year. So you may need to buy more than one container to get enough good sized berries. Also, some grocery stores sell long strawberries around Valentine’s Day that are perfect for dipping in chocolate so keep an eye out for them.

Dark Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Pour dark chocolate discs into a small bowl. Heat them in the microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds. Stir and then continue heating in 10 second increments, stirring after each time, until smooth.

Dip the dry strawberries in the melted dark chocolate and place them on a piece of parchment paper or wax paper. Once the chocolate is set, store the chocolate coated strawberries in the refrigerator for 2-3 days in an airtight container covered with waxed paper.

What kind of dark chocolate should I use?

Since chocolate covered strawberries are made with only two ingredients, the strawberry and the chocolate, you want to use the best tasting ingredients you can. Here are a few options:

  • Dark chocolate melting wafers are made from cocoa powder and oil. They are easy to melt and easy to work with. This is what I used to make these chocolate covered strawberries.
  • Couverture dark chocolate discs or wafers are dark chocolate in a disc form. They are made from cocoa butter and chocolate liquor. It is top of the line in terms of quality and price. This kind of chocolate is not as easy to work with and needs to be tempered when melted.
  • Dark chocolate chips are perfect when baking since they hold their shape. If you do want to use them for dipping or drizzling, add a teaspoon of shortening per 6 ounces of chocolate chips when melting it to make it smoother.
  • A dark chocolate baking bar is dark chocolate in a bar form. It can also be used for dipping strawberries. Follow the melting instructions on the package.
  • For a lighter version, try using sugar-free dark chocolate chips. Follow the instructions on the package for melting the chocolate chips.

White Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

How can I decorate chocolate covered strawberries?

If you want to add decorations, only dip one strawberry at a time. Decorate it and then move on to the next strawberry so that the chocolate doesn’t harden before you can add the decorations.

Sprinkles

To get sprinkles on all sides of the strawberry, add the sprinkles before setting it on the parchment paper. Or if you prefer, you can add the sprinkles after placing a chocolate dipped strawberry on the parchment paper. You can choose different colors and shapes of sprinkles depending on the occasion.

Drizzles

Drizzle melted white chocolate over the dark chocolate covered strawberries for a pretty contrast. Put the melted white chocolate into an icing bag for a more precise look or drizzle it from a fork for a more random look.

For a more subtle look, drizzle the same kind of chocolate that you used for dipping. Or drizzle colored candy melts over the strawberries for a pop of color.

Patterns

After coating a strawberry with chocolate, drizzle a contrasting color over the still soft chocolate. Then, drag a toothpick through the chocolate to make a fun pattern.

Toppings

There are many other toppings you can add to your chocolate covered strawberries. We rolled some in mini chocolate chips. You could also use toppings such as chopped nuts, mini M&M’s or chocolate curls.
