    Tonia’s Notes

Whenever I went to Dairy Queen as a kid, I ordered one of two things: a Mr. Misty or a small chocolate-dipped cone. This homemade chocolate shell reminds me of the chocolate coating on those dipped ice cream cones!

I made this recipe as a coating for my ice cream tacos. Once we realized how easy it is to prepare and how delicious it tastes, we started making it as an ice cream topping.

How To Make Magic Chocolate Shell Topping

    Step one button.

    Measure Ingredients

Put the semi-sweet chocolate chips and coconut oil in a small microwave-safe bowl.

    Ingredients in a bowl.
    Step two button.

    Melt In The Microwave

Melt the mixture in the microwave on high for 1 minute, then stir. Continue microwaving it in 15-second intervals, stirring after each time, until it is smooth.

    Stirring the topping until smooth.
    Step three button.

    Container

Transfer the chocolate shell into an airtight container for storage.

    Pouring into a mason jar.
    Step four button.

    Drizzle On Ice Cream

Scoop ice cream into bowls, spoon the chocolate shell out of the jar, and drizzle it on the ice cream. You can also dip frozen treats such as ice cream cones or ice cream tacos into it.

    Make Ahead and Storage Tips

    • Thickness: You may want to adjust the thickness of this chocolate shell depending on how you plan to use it. For a thinner shell, add more coconut oil, and for a thicker shell, use more chocolate chips.
    • Make Ahead: This is the perfect ice cream topping to prepare ahead of time, so that it is ready to go when you want to use it.
    • Refrigerator: Store it in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 weeks. You can also refrigerate it if you want to.
    • Reheat: When you want to use it again, transfer the chocolate ice cream shell to a microwave-safe container and reheat it in the microwave.
