mug of hot chocolate with purple sprinkles on marshmallows

When I made heart shaped hot chocolate bombs for Valentine’s Day, I added sprinkles to the bombs but they all sank to the bottom of the hot chocolate. So I figured out how to decorate marshmallows with sprinkles so that they would float to the top!

tubes of sprinkles, a bowl, mini marshmallows and a spray bottle

To coat marshmallows with sugar sprinkles, put the sprinkles in a small bowl. I used a mix of light pink, dark pink, and red sugar sprinkles.

Lightly spritz mini marshmallows with water. Transfer the marshmallows to the bowl of sprinkles. Toss and stir the marshmallows to coat them.

Remove the decorated marshmallows from the bowl and place them on parchment paper to dry.

heart shaped sprinkles in a bowl, mini marshmallows and a spray bottle

To coat marshmallows with mini heart shaped sprinkles, put the sprinkles in a small bowl. I used a mix of pink, white, and red mini heart sprinkles.

Lightly spray the mini marshmallows with water. Transfer the marshmallows to the bowl of sprinkles. Toss and stir the marshmallows to coat them. Place the sprinkles coated marshmallows on parchment paper to dry.

pink nonpareils in bowl, mini marshmallows, spray bottle

When using nonpareils (tiny ball sprinkles), the process is the same. Spray the mini marshmallows lightly with water and then coat them with nonpareils. Place them on parchment paper to dry.

Once the water has dried, store the decorated mini marshmallows in an airtight container.

Can I use other kinds of sprinkles to decorate the marshmallows?

Yes, you can use the same process for how to decorate mini marshmallows with other colors of sprinkles and other types of sprinkles for every holiday and occasion. Water alone isn’t enough to adhere large, heavy sprinkles to the marshmallows. If the sprinkles are large and heavy, you would need to use melted white chocolate chips or almond bark.

Is the process the same with large marshmallows?

Yes, you can use the same step for how to decorate marshmallows with large marshmallows. For the best results, only decorate one large marshmallow at a time. And of course, you will need way more sprinkles since there is a larger area to cover.

Use the decorated marshmallows on mugs of hot cocoa or in hot chocolate bombs.
