Make this slow cooker hot chocolate recipe for your next winter party or potluck! You can even turn it into a hot cocoa bar by including lots of toppings and stir-ins.

    Tonia’s Notes

After a few years with very little snow, we are enjoying a winter wonderland this year in Minnesota! It’s the perfect time for cozy recipes like chicken noodle soup, tater tot hot dish, and crockpot hot chocolate.

I like that this recipe is easy to make and is a step above the instant, powdered varieties. Plus, hot cocoa is universally loved by everyone from kids to adults.

How To Make Hot Chocolate In A Slow Cooker

    Step one button.

    Ingredients

Put the whole milk, heavy cream, finely chopped semi-sweet and dark chocolate, vanilla, and salt in a crockpot. Stir to combine.

    Ingredients in a crockpot.
    Step two button.

    Cook

Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours. Stir every 30-45 minutes to prevent the chocolate from burning on the bottom. Once the chocolate is melted and the cocoa is hot, turn the heat to “keep warm” or whatever is the lowest setting on your crockpot.

    Stirring with a silicone spoon.
    Step three button.

    Toppings

To serve, ladle into mugs and top with mini marshmallows or whipped cream, and chocolate shavings.

    Bonus Tips

    • Make Ahead: When making this for a party, I like to finely chop the chocolate and prepare the chocolate shavings the day before. Then, on the day of the party, all I have to do is put everything in the slow cooker.
    • Hot Chocolate Bar: Make it even more fun by turning it into a hot cocoa bar. Put out stir-ins like peppermint syrup, caramel, and peanut butter. Then add bowls of toppings such as marshmallows, sprinkles, cookie crumbles, chocolate shavings, and crushed candy canes.
    • Leftovers: Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
    • Reheat: You can reheat the hot chocolate in the microwave by the mugful.
