What Is On A Cheeseburger Pizza
A cheeseburger pizza has the makings of a cheeseburger but in pizza form. Each restaurant makes its own version, and they are all delicious!
In 2020, Domino’s Cheeseburger Pizza was introduced. It was topped with a “ketchup-mustard sauce, American cheese, beef, fresh onions, diced tomatoes, shredded provolone, and cheddar cheese.”
This pizza is no longer on the menu, so we made a copycat recipe that we think is even better than the original version so that we can enjoy it at home whenever we want!
Ingredients Needed and Substitutions
- Dough: Rather than use hamburger buns, this recipe uses homemade pizza dough. You can also use store-bought, ready-made dough if you are short on time.
- Sauce: We used traditional pizza sauce and drizzled a tasty ketchup-mustard hamburger sauce on top of the pizza!
- Cheese: This pizza includes shredded mozzarella, diced American cheese, and shredded provolone cheese. You can also use shredded cheddar cheese in place of American cheese and parmesan in place of provolone cheese.
- Meat: Rather than using pepperoni or sausage, a hamburger pizza uses cooked, crumbled ground beef! For the ultimate burger flavor, grill a couple of burgers and then crumble them to use on the pizza.
- Pickles: We decided to add sliced pickles to our pizza even though Domino’s Pizza cheeseburger pizza does not include them. You can add the pickles after baking the pizza if you prefer.
- Tomatoes: Diced tomatoes add to the cheeseburger flavor profile. We chose not to include diced onions, but they are another flavorful topping you can add.
- Bacon: Another ingredient Dominos neglected to add is bacon bits. The best burgers always include bacon!
- Garnish: This pizza is delicious with a drizzle of hamburger sauce on top! Or you can serve it on the side as a pizza dipping sauce.
How To Make Cheeseburger Pizza
Pizza Crust
If you have a pizza stone, you can turn your oven into a pizza oven and get results that are closer to what you find at a pizza place. Preheat the pizza stone, along with the oven, so that the bottom of the crust bakes on a hot stone and gets crispy.
The most difficult part of making pizzas this way is transferring the pizza onto the stone in the oven. We have a few tips to make this easier, as well as an alternative method for those of you who don’t have a pizza stone.
- Pizza Peel: Put semolina flour on a pizza peel before adding your pizza dough crust. The dough should be able to slide around when you give the pizza peel a little shake. If it sticks, add more semolina flour underneath.
- Cookie Sheet: If you don’t have a pizza peel, or your pizza peel is too small, as was the case at our house, you can use a cookie sheet instead. Roll out the crust on a silicone mat. Sprinkle semolina flour on a cookie sheet before adding the crust.
- Pizza Stone Alternative: If you don’t have a baking stone, you can make the pizza on a greased baking sheet instead. The only difference is that you will need to prebake the crust for five minutes before adding the toppings.
Toppings
Once the pizza crust is ready, quickly add the toppings before the dough starts to stick to the pan. Start with pizza sauce and shredded mozzarella.
Then, add the cooked ground beef and diced American cheese.
Next, add the dill pickle slices and diced tomatoes.
Finally, sprinkle the top with shredded provolone cheese and bacon bits.
Bake the Pizza
Slide the pizza from the pizza peel or cookie sheet onto the pizza stone in the oven. Bake the pizza at 425˚F for 15-20 minutes.
Or, if you want to cook the pizza on a baking sheet, cook it at 425˚F for 10-15 minutes since you prebaked the crust for 5 minutes already.
Add Hamburger Sauce
After removing the pizza from the oven, drizzle hamburger sauce over the pizza before serving.
Variations
Everyone loves different things on their cheeseburgers, so why not make your own burger pizza? Here are a couple of variations to try:
Hamburger Pizza
To make a hamburger pizza, you’ll still want to include cheese since it is a pizza you are making! But keep the flavor mild and only use shredded mozzarella. Then add whatever hamburger toppings you want to make it your own!
Big Mac Pizza
A big mac pizza should include the making of a McDonald’s Big Mac which are double beef patties, cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce, diced onions, sliced pickles, and sauce. So, when making the pizza top the crust with extra cooked and crumbled ground beef, shredded cheddar cheese, diced onions, and sliced pickles. After baking the pizza, add shredded lettuce and hamburger sauce.
Storage
- Make Ahead: To prepare ahead of time, make the dough and store it in the fridge overnight. Allow the dough to come to room temperature before shaping it into a crust.
- Refrigerator: Allow leftover pizza to cool and then store it in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
- Freezer: You can store leftovers in a freezer-safe, airtight container or bag for 1-2 months. If you plan to freeze leftover cheeseburger pizza, don’t bake the pickles on the pizza since they won’t freeze well. Simply add them right before eating the pizza.
- Reheating: Reheat leftover pizza in the oven, microwave, or air fryer.
