How do I make honey mustard pretzel seasoning?

To make the seasoning, whisk together canola oil, melted butter, honey, ground mustard, and onion powder.

Can I add real mustard to the mixture?

Yes, if you want to add a little real mustard to the mixture you can do so. I would suggest adding less of the butter or oil if you choose to add mustard to keep the total amount of liquids the same.

stirring the pretzels with a white spatula

Spread the pretzel sticks out on a rimmed baking sheet. Pour the honey mustard seasoning mixture over the pretzels and stir until coated.

What kind of pretzel should I use?

You can use whatever kind of pretzels you want for this honey mustard pretzels recipe. Just keep the ounces of pretzels to around the same amount as called for in the recipe.

I chose pretzel sticks this time because that is what I had on hand. They would also be delicious with pretzels twists, snaps which look like crosshatch squares, or butter spindles.

If you are making the honey mustard pretzels for a holiday or special occasion, look for seasonal pretzels in holiday shapes, circles, or footballs.

Bake the pretzels at 220˚F for about 60 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.

Why bake the pretzels?

Baking the honey mustard pretzels at a low temperature gives the oil and butter time to absorb while allowing the excess liquid to evaporate.  Also while baking, the honey creates a delicious, light glaze over the pretzels.

Remove the honey mustard pretzels sticks from the oven and allow them to cool completely, stirring occasionally.

Can I make a sugar-free honey mustard pretzels?

They actually make sugar-free honey alternatives like this one on Amazon. You could use a product like that or substitute the honey with another sugar alternative. Keep in mind that making substitutions can affect the outcome of the pretzels. You may need to make adjustments to the amount of sugar you add and the baking time.
