So what does walking taco mean? The name Walking Taco brings to mind a taco with little legs but rather it is a taco in a bag that you can eat while walking around.

Start by making the taco meat. You can find my recipe for taco seasoning here. This step can be done ahead of time. You can store the taco meat in the refrigerator and reheat when needed. Or if you are making this recipe for a party, you can put the taco meat in a slow cooker on low to keep it warm while serving.

What kind of meat is on walking tacos?

For these walking tacos, we went with the classic taco meat. It is easy to prepare, readily available, and full of flavor. You can also use chicken, steak, pork, fish, or seafood.

If you want to have a taco in a bag at a picnic, you have a couple of choices. You can eat the walking tacos with cold taco meat (or cold cooked chicken). Or keep the taco meat warm in an insulated, vacuum sealed container like this stainless steel pot.

    bag of crushed chips

To assemble a walking taco, start by opening a small bag of chips. Crush them into smaller pieces. Then, fold down the sides of the bag to make it more sturdy.

Which chips are used for a taco in a bag?

The classic chip choices for a taco in a bag are nacho cheese and cool ranch Doritos. But the sky is the limit when it comes to which tortilla or corn chips you can use. If they come in a small bag, you can use them. You can even buy original, salted tortilla chips in small bags.

    adding cheese and beans

Put shredded lettuce, meat, shredded cheese, and black beans on top of the chips.

What toppings do you put on a walking taco?

A walking taco can be as complex or as simple as you want it to be. For the supreme nachos, add all of the toppings and for the most basic, just add meat and cheese.

    adding tomatoes and onions

The toppings in this recipe include:

    • shredded lettuce
    • taco meat
    • shredded cheese
    • black beans
    • diced tomatoes
    • minced onions
    • sliced black olives
    • sliced green onions
    • guacamole
    • sour cream

Here are some additional toppings ideas:

    • diced green chilies
    • chopped cilantro
    • jalapeno slices
    • diced avocado
    • sweet corn
    • diced bell peppers
    • salsa

What do you serve with walking tacos?

Since a taco in a bag is the main dish, readers often wonder what do you serve with walking tacos. I suggest serving them with other portable menu items keeping with the spirit behind a taco in a bag. The side dishes can actually go right in the bag with the taco such as cowboy caviar or pineapple salsa. Desserts such as peanut butter no bake cookies or chocolate chip cookie bars that can be handheld are a great choice.

Tips for preparing ahead of time

The reason walking tacos are such a popular choice for camping, parties, and picnic is that everything can be prepared ahead of time and then assembled when ready to eat.

    • Cook the taco meat ahead of time and reheat it when needed.
    • Rinse, drain, slice, and dice all of the toppings and store them in separate containers in the refrigerator until ready to use.
    • Serve buffet style and use a crockpot to keep the meat warm.
    • Put the bags of chips in a basket or large container.
    • Gather all of the toppings containers onto a tray with spoons and mini tongs for serving.
    • The beverages can go in a bucket with ice.
