Sesame Chicken is a favorite take-out choice and you can make it at home in less than 30 minutes! Serve over rice or noodles.
When dining out one of our favorite meals to order is sesame chicken with fried rice and cream cheese wontons. So today I’m sharing my sesame chicken recipe that you can make at home for your family.
Start with preparing the sesame sauce. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, low sodium soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame seed oil, and crushed red pepper flakes. Set the sauce aside for later.
What else can I add to the sesame sauce?
As with my stir fry sauce recipe, you can easily adapt this sesame sauce recipe to make it the way your family likes it. If you prefer a milder sauce, you can skip the red pepper flakes. Or if you don’t have hoisin sauce try using sweet barbecue sauce instead. Additional ingredients you could try adding include garlic, ginger, chili paste, oyster sauce, or honey.
Cut the boneless, skinless chicken breasts into cubes and placed them in a gallon size zip top bag. Add the flour and black pepper. Seal the bag and turn to coat the chicken.
Warm the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully add the coated chicken pieces in a single layer.
Cook the chicken for about four minutes and then flip the chicken pieces over and cook on the other side for an additional four minutes.
Turn the heat down to medium and pour the sesame sauce into the skillet and stir to coat the chicken. Cook for an additional four to six minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thickened and the chicken is cooked through.
Which veggies could I add to sesame chicken?
Meals like this are a great opportunity to add vegetables. You can add sliced carrots, diced bell peppers, diced onions, snap peas, broccoli, and cauliflower florets. You may need to pre-cook the vegetables before adding them with the sauce on how dense your veggies, how thinly you slice them, and how well you want them cooked.
Remove the sesame chicken from the heat and top with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
